Poetry by Heart
Honors students in my class memorize a new poem every three weeks. In the first week of class, we discuss in depth why this is beneficial, and then students take a quiz over that information. Study the worksheet that I distributed in class to prepare yourself for the quiz. If you've misplaced the information, download it from the class Google Drive folder (use the link Worksheets to access the folder). If your interest has been piqued by the lecture, read more on memorization here or here.
In subsequent weeks, this space will be devoted to creative ways of memorizing whatever poem we are tackling. Among other things, there will be song versions to listen to, YouTube videos to watch, and fill-in-the-blank worksheets to attempt. Over time, each student tends to develop his or her own methods of memorizing, so experiment with the tools at hand until you figure out how best to fulfill this class requirement. Don't forget: practicing with a parent or friend may turn out to be the most expedient way of accomplishing this particular feat. What won't work is leaving it until the last minute!
