A hundred years ago, it was a big deal to have a photograph taken. People had to go to a proper photographer, sit still, and actually pay to have the image captured. Thus, they put a lot of thought into how they would look in each photo. For someone to choose to be photographed with a book, then, speaks volumes (pardon the pun!).
